Different Types And Patterns Of The World - 1187 Words

It is early in the morning, and women in Hindu families all over the world are preparing to begin their day. As the women in these families, they have many duties and rituals that they perform daily for them and their families. After washing up, they clean the house and make sure that everything is properly decorated. Next, they prepare the place that they are going to perform a ritual where they make something called a Kolam. Kolams are made in many different places, there are different types and patterns, and there are many reasons that Kolams are said to be made. First, I want to look at what they actually are: A kolam is a drawing that is typically done at the entrance of a house and is created from rice flour. Kolams are not only made for the entrance of a house however. Kolams are also made for things other than every day activities such as weddings and in front of temples, which are considered sacred kolams that are not to be touched. Kolams are drawn for festivals and many other special events. Although there are several traditional patterns, kolams do not always have a pattern and the creativity of the drawing is left up to whomever is drawing it. Kolam is practiced only by women and is taught to the younger girls in the family by the mothers. They are very intricate drawings and there are certain ways in which the women go about drawing them.
